How do we know whether a sermon is “good” or not? Many Christians make shallow evaluations. The Bible says in the last days people will gather around themselves preachers who “say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Tim. 4:3). You don’t want to be that person. If you’re not careful, you can spend years listening to a shallow preacher and not learn much. Or even worse, you can be led astray by a charming false teacher. The great apostle Paul, perhaps the most effective preacher of all time, in 1 Corinthians 1-2 described his own preaching and what makes preaching powerful. This has great application for all believers – we need to deepen in our understanding of what makes good preaching – but it is especially applicable to those of you who are “church shopping” right now. Make sure you know what you’re really looking for.
